"What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, more unashamed conversation about illnesses that not only affect individuals, but families as well"

About Heal

Health Encouraging Anti-Stigma League

What is HEAL?

The Health Encouraging Anti-Stigma League is a student-led organization that connects students with mental health resources and advocates for stigma-free communities. Our team consists of dedicated students that are passionate about this issue. Our goal is to "shatter the stigma" by educating and promoting awareness about mental health and mental illness. We educate students in our community on how to be aware of the stigma surrounding mental illness, and how we can overcome it together.

Why is HEAL Important?

In communities worldwide, teenagers feel that they cannot discuss their mental health without being chastised or compared to their peers. When teens cannot speak out about their mental health issues, they don't get access to the help they need. This is why, on average, a shocking 3,041 teenagers in the United States attempt suicide each day. Furthermore, in the digital age,  the media's romanticism of mental illness creates even more stigma about this issue, making it more important than ever for teens to be educated about mental health.

FOR IMMEDIATE HELP

Mental illnesses can be treated. If you are a child or teen, talk to your parents, school counselor, or health care provider. If you are a parent and need help starting a conversation with your child or teen about mental health, visit http://www.mentalhealth.gov/. If you are unsure where to go for help, ask your pediatrician or family doctor or visit NIMH’s Help for Mental Illnesses webpage. Many schools have dedicated counselors and mental health professionals to help students.

It may be helpful to save several emergency numbers to your cell phones. The ability to get immediate help for yourself or for a friend can make a difference.

  • The non-emergency number for the local police department

  • The Crisis Text Line: 741741

  • The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

If you or someone you know needs immediate help, call 911 or the National Suicide Prevention LifeLine at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
